About our tours

Our guests are diverse, but they all share a passion for immersive travel and a curiosity for culture.
Many are solo travellers, adventurous spirits, photographers, and cultural enthusiasts looking for unique, off-the-beaten-path experiences.
They value meaningful interactions, local authenticity, and enjoy connecting with like-minded people from different walks of life.
Whether travelling solo or with friends, our guests come ready to explore, learn, and make lasting memories in a small group setting.

While our tours are generally accessible to those with a moderate level of fitness, the immersive nature of our experiences may involve some physically demanding activities.
Expect to walk, hike, or carry your own luggage in less developed areas where comfort may be secondary to adventure.
We’ll provide all the necessary details for each trip, but if you’re uncertain, we can discuss which tours suit your fitness level best

Most of our travellers are solo adventurers, and we arrange twin-share accommodation, pairing you with someone of the same gender. If you prefer your own space, you can opt for a private room by paying a single supplement.
On certain tours, some accommodations are shared, like overnight trains or local stays, and we’ll clearly inform you beforehand.
If your gender identity differs from your passport, contact us so we can discuss your rooming preferences.

We keep our groups small, usually between 5-12 people. On average, you’ll find 6-8 travellers per tour.

Since we’re a newer company, some tours may run with fewer people, but that just means more flexibility and a cozier experience. Small groups allow us to visit locals’ homes, use public transport, and explore communities without overwhelming them. For our overland tours, we use purpose-built vehicles that fit 3-7 travellers, and if needed, we’ll simply add another car. Group sizes are always listed in the tour descriptions.

The minimum age for our tours is 16. If you’re under 18, you’ll need to travel with one or both parents or a legal guardian, following the relevant laws.

There’s no maximum age limit, but it’s important that you’re in good health for the tour you choose. If you have any concerns, feel free to reach out to us before booking!

Yes, our tours are inclusive and welcoming to LGBTQIA+ travellers. We want everyone to feel comfortable and respected.

Please be aware that in some destinations, local laws may not align with LGBTQIA+ rights as understood elsewhere. Homosexuality may be criminalised, and some places may not recognise gender fluidity or transgender identities. We encourage you to check resources like Equaldex for current information on local laws before booking.

While we strive to create a respectful environment, we also recognise the importance of being mindful of local customs and laws. We ask that you respect the local culture, even if it differs from your own values. Discrimination, harassment, or violence of any kind is not tolerated. If you experience or witness inappropriate behaviour, please inform your tour leader immediately.

Absolutely, you’re welcome to join our tours with dietary restrictions. Please let us know about your specific needs in advance so we can do our best to accommodate them. We’ll work with our local partners to arrange suitable meals, but it’s helpful to be flexible and prepared for some limitations, especially in remote areas.

We welcome travellers with special needs and are committed to making our tours accessible. Please email us with your specific requirements so we can discuss how we can accommodate them. It’s important to consider if you’re physically and mentally able to handle the chosen itinerary, as you might need to carry your own bags, use public transport, and engage in demanding activities.

We’ll do our best to make reasonable adjustments, like booking ground floor rooms or providing written directions along with verbal ones. Many travellers with disabilities have enjoyed our tours with the help of a friend or companion. However, we cannot compromise the experience for the rest of the group, so each case needs to be individually assessed. If a group tour isn’t suitable, we can explore the option of a private departure. Contact us for more details on how we can assist!

Booking

The deposit is non-refundable because our operations team starts booking your services with local suppliers as soon as you confirm your tour. Many of these services, like hiking permits or on-tour activities, are non-refundable and can’t be transferred. Even if some services can be cancelled, there might be cancellation or admin fees covered by your deposit.

Additionally, your deposit helps compensate for the dedicated work and expertise of our team. We invest significant time and resources into planning and organising your tour to ensure a great experience. We appreciate your understanding and if you have any concerns or need to discuss your situation, please don’t hesitate to contact us!

We don’t have a formal loyalty discount, but we do have an exclusive WhatsApp community called “unusual voyagers” for our returning travellers. By joining, you’ll get updates on competitions, partner offers, insiders-only previews of sales, and be among the first to hear about new tours. If you’ve travelled with us before, you’re welcome to join and stay connected!

Absolutely! If you’d like to arrive early at your joining point hotel or stay a bit longer after your tour to explore, just contact us. We’ll be happy to help you book extra nights of accommodation.

We don’t accept guests arriving after the tour has started, as it’s tough to catch up. However, if you need to leave early, we can help you arrange that. While we can’t reimburse you for any unused portion of the tour, we’ll do our best to accommodate you if you let us know in advance. Just contact us, and we’ll make sure our team on the ground is aware of your plans.

Flights to and from the starting point of the trip are not included, giving you the flexibility to choose the most convenient time and location to fly from.
As for transfers, they are typically included in the tour price if they fall within the official program dates and take place in the city listed in the itinerary. Specific details on included transfers will be outlined in your trip information before departure.

You’ll receive detailed information about your tour a few weeks before departure in your Voyagers Handbook. This will include your final itinerary, accommodation details, and any last-minute updates.

If there are any last-minute changes, such as a new joining or finishing point, we’ll email you an update before the tour begins. We recommend booking pre/post-tour accommodation through us, so we can re-book you into a new accommodation if there are changes to the joining/finishing points, saving you the hassle.

If you have any specific questions or need more info before then, feel free to reach out to us!

Most of our tours are guaranteed to run once we reach a minimum number of participants. We never want to cancel a tour, but sometimes unforeseen events beyond our control can occur, and we may need to cancel or adjust tours due to factors like low numbers or other circumstances. For more details, please check our Terms and Conditions page. If you have any concerns, feel free to reach out!

If you need to cancel your tour, please contact us with written confirmation. Cancellation fees may apply depending on how close the departure date is.

We don’t offer full refunds for cancellations, but you can cancel up to 60 days before departure and either transfer your deposit to another tour or use it as credit for future travel.

For changes made less than 60 days before departure, a cancellation fee may be charged according to our Terms and Conditions. For more details on cancellations, credits, and refunds, check out our “Customer Duties” section.

Before Departure

In Portugal, while travel insurance isn’t legally mandatory for all travellers, it’s strongly recommended, especially for our tours that often take you to remote areas with expensive healthcare. Travel insurance can cover medical emergencies, repatriations, and lost luggage.
Requirements can vary depending on your tour, destinations, and personal circumstances. Some countries may require proof of travel insurance for entry.
We’ve partnered with IATI insurance to offer coverage for all our destinations and tour styles, including North Korea. As a voyager, you can access a special rate on your insurance through this link.

Vaccination and medical requirements vary by country. For each tour, we provide a group online travellers consultation with Dr. Diogo Medina at the Consulta do Viajante, who will explain everything you need to know. During this session, you’ll receive any necessary prescriptions and learn how to prepare your travellers’ pharmacy for your tour.

You can find information on visa and entry requirements in the visa section of your Voyagers Handbook. If you need this information before receiving your handbook, you can check here.

Countries can change their requirements and advice at short notice, so be sure to check the latest information and travel advice. As stated in our Terms and Conditions, it’s your responsibility to ensure you have everything needed for your destination and to travel on time. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us!

Yes, we can assist with letters of invitation and support documentation if you’re traveling to a destination where these are required for a visa application. Check the visa section of your Voyagers Handbook for information on what you need to send to us, such as scanned passports or employment letters. If you have any questions or need further assistance, just let us know!

The best way to prepare is to stay open-minded and respectful. Before your tour, do some research on local customs, traditions, and social norms to avoid unintentional offense. We’ll provide cultural insights in your pre-departure info, but simple things like learning basic phrases, dressing appropriately, and respecting local laws can go a long way.
When in doubt, observe what locals do or ask your tour leader for guidance – they’re there to help you navigate these differences comfortably.

The safety of our travellers, tour leaders, and on-ground operators is a major priority for us. We closely monitor world events and make decisions based on informed advice from various sources, including local authorities and those at our destination. We will inform you of any significant changes or concerns that might affect your travel plans.
For the latest information and travel advice, we recommend checking official sources.

It’s a good idea to bring both cash and cards. The cheapest way to manage money is to use a prepaid card, like Revolut or N26, and withdraw local currency from ATMs as needed. While many places accept credit or debit cards, some remote areas may only take cash.

We strongly recommend bringing a backpack or duffel bag. Suitcases can be cumbersome and difficult to store on buses, under seats, or in tight spaces. You’ll often need to carry your own luggage on and off buses and trains, and up hotel staircases. Suitcases with wheels may struggle on dirt or cobblestone roads.
For specific luggage recommendations or restrictions related to your tour, check your Voyagers Handbook.

Ideally, you should arrive on the first day of the tour, preferably in the morning, to make the most of your time in the new destination. However, if possible, try to arrive the day before the tour starts. This gives you time to settle in, recover from any travel fatigue, and be ready for the tour’s activities. Arriving a day early also helps you handle any unexpected delays or issues that might arise.

You’ll find detailed instructions on where to meet your group in your Voyagers Handbook. When you arrive at the airport, a transfer will be waiting to take you to your accommodation, where you’ll join the rest of the group.

Your tour leader will reach out to you and the rest of the group by email before departure. Typically, a WhatsApp group is also set up for those who choose to join, letting everyone connect, share experiences, and get acquainted before the tour begins.

During the Tour

No, you’re not required to participate in every activity. While we encourage you to join in for a richer experience, you have the freedom to opt out of any activity that doesn’t interest you or if you need some downtime. Just let your tour leader know if you plan to skip anything, and they can help you with alternative suggestions.

Yes, there is free time built into our tours! We believe in balancing scheduled activities with personal exploration. You’ll have the chance to relax, wander, or discover local spots on your own. During these free periods, feel free to ask your tour leader for recommendations or tips on what to do nearby. Enjoying some downtime allows you to immerse yourself in the local culture at your own pace!

Yes, we recommend doing laundry to keep your luggage light! Laundry facilities will vary depending on the tour and destination. In many places, you’ll have access to laundry services at hotels or nearby laundromats. However, on more remote or off-the-beaten-path tours, laundry options may be limited, so it’s a good idea to plan accordingly.

Toilet facilities can vary depending on the destination and type of accommodation. On most tours, you’ll have access to standard Western-style toilets, especially in hotels and major towns. However, in more remote areas or local accommodations, you might encounter squat toilets or less modern facilities.
We recommend bringing biodegradable travel tissues and hand sanitiser for convenience.

Most of our stays are in locally-run hotels with twin or triple rooms and private bathrooms. However, our unique destinations and travel style mean you’ll also experience incredible accommodations like treetop houses, wild camping in caves, sunset bungalows on the Mekong, and traditional gers in the steppes. In more remote areas, we may stay in Mongolian gers with 4-6 beds, wild camp, or use overnight trains and buses. It’s all about embracing adventure and authenticity, so be prepared to trade comfort for an unforgettable journey!

Food is one of the most exciting parts of travel. While there will usually be some familiar fare, you’ll also be confronted with the new, interesting and downright weird of the culinary world. We like to think of it as an adventure for all the senses!

Our flexible itineraries often allow you to eat with the group or branch out on your own, so you can eat to suit any budget or desire.

We usually recommend buying a local SIM card or an international e-SIM, such as those from Mobimatter (just ensure your phone is unlocked before you travel). Most hotels and public places offer Wi-Fi, so you can typically stay in touch with home every few days if you wish.
However, in remote locations like Ethiopia, North Korea, deserts, and mountains, internet access may be limited or unavailable due to poor signal or lack of connectivity.

In most places, tipping is expected and can vary by country and region. While it’s not mandatory, tipping is a thoughtful way to acknowledge the excellent service provided by your local guides and drivers. If you’re happy with the service you received, tipping your tour leader at the end of the tour is always appreciated, even though it’s not compulsory.
Though it may not be customary for you, tipping holds significant meaning for those who take care of you during your travels. For specific tipping guidelines related to your tour, please check your Voyagers Handbook.
