Tonga soa! Welcome to Madagascar 🇲🇬
Your adventure begins in Antananarivo, Madagascar’s lively hilltop capital, where tradition and modern life exist side by side. After clearing customs, you’ll be welcomed by a local representative, who will help with the practicalities of arriving in a new country, from exchanging currency to setting up a local SIM card, ensuring a smooth start to the journey ahead.
As you make your way through the bustling streets to the hotel, you’ll catch your first glimpse of Madagascar’s colourful everyday life: busy markets, colonial buildings, hillside neighbourhoods and the unmistakable energy of a city unlike anywhere else in the Indian Ocean. This evening is all about settling in, meeting your fellow travellers and enjoying your first taste of the world’s fourth-largest island.

Tsikelikely. Slowly leaving Antananarivo behind, you’ll travel through Madagascar’s central highlands, where rice terraces, eucalyptus forests and traditional villages stretch across the landscape. This is the homeland of the Merina people, whose history and culture have shaped the island for centuries. Along the way, a stop in Ambatolampy introduces you to one of Madagascar’s most distinctive crafts, where artisans transform recycled aluminium into the pots found in households across the country.
By the afternoon, you’ll reach Antsirabe before exploring the nearby volcanic lakes of Andraikiba and Tritriva. Surrounded by forest and local legends, these peaceful crater lakes offer a glimpse into the folklore that remains deeply rooted in Malagasy culture, making for a fitting introduction to the island’s landscapes and traditions.

Along the way, you’ll be welcomed into Merina villages, where local traditions remain deeply rooted.
Your walk ends in Betafo, where the weekly market brings together communities from across the region. Colourful stalls overflow with fresh produce, spices, woven crafts and handmade goods, creating a lively atmosphere that captures the essence of the Highlands. As the road descends, the scenery becomes drier, offering a glimpse into the island’s remarkable diversity.
By the afternoon, you’ll arrive in Miandrivazo, a quiet riverside town that marks the gateway to western Madagascar. Settle into your hotel overlooking the Menabe plains and, if the weather allows, enjoy one of the region’s spectacular sunsets as you prepare for the adventures that await.

By the afternoon, you’ll arrive in Morondava, a laid-back coastal town overlooking the Mozambique Channel. Today takes you deep into one of Madagascar’s most remote regions. Leaving the coast behind, you’ll travel through dry forests and landscapes dotted with majestic baobabs before crossing the Tsiribihina River by ferry. As the journey continues, the paved roads disappear, giving way to dusty tracks that wind through isolated villages where life has changed little over the generations.
A second ferry across the Manambolo River marks the final stretch before reaching Bekopaka, the gateway to the extraordinary Tsingy de Bemaraha. Surrounded by untouched wilderness, this small settlement is the perfect base for exploring one of Madagascar’s most remarkable natural wonders.

Today you’ll explore one of Madagascar’s greatest natural wonders: the Grand Tsingy de Bemaraha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site unlike anywhere else on Earth. Over millions of years, rain and wind have sculpted vast limestone plateaus into razor-sharp pinnacles, deep canyons and narrow passages, creating an extraordinary landscape known as the “stone forest”.
Accompanied by a local guide, you’ll venture through this spectacular maze of rock, crossing suspension bridges, climbing ladders and following trails that reveal breathtaking viewpoints. Along the way, keep an eye out for lemurs, birds and reptiles that have adapted to this unique ecosystem, making the Tsingy one of Madagascar’s most extraordinary wildlife habitats.
🛌 Accommodation: Lodge in Bekopaka
🍽️ Meals: Breakfast
Leaving Bekopaka behind, you’ll retrace your route across the Manambolo and Tsiribihina Rivers, passing remote villages and the ancestral lands of the Sakalava people. Along the way, keep an eye out for their elaborately decorated tombs, an important expression of Malagasy beliefs surrounding ancestry and remembrance.
By late afternoon, you’ll reach one of Madagascar’s most iconic landscapes: the Avenue of the Baobabs. As the sun begins to set, the towering giants cast long shadows across the dusty road, creating a scene that has become a symbol of the island. It’s the perfect moment to pause, take in the silence and watch one of Madagascar’s most spectacular sunsets.

Along the way, you may even spot local gold panners patiently searching riverbeds using traditional methods.
By evening, you’ll return to Antsirabe, where the fresh highland air and relaxed atmosphere provide a welcome contrast to the dry western plains. It’s a chance to unwind after a long day on the road before the next chapter of your Malagasy adventure.

As the road climbs into the escarpment, the scenery changes dramatically. Every walk is different, making each encounter with the forest a unique experience.
Later, you’ll visit a local vanilla cooperative to learn about one of Madagascar’s most valuable exports and the communities behind its production. As you follow the park’s trails, keep an eye out for ring-tailed lemurs basking on the rocks and the unique plants that have adapted to this dry environment.
